We are a family of 3 (mum, dad and child) well in fact, at the time of writing, a family of 9 if you include:-
- the camper trailer
- 2 dogs
- 2 guinea pigs; and
- the rainbow lorriket called Larry who is in fact a girl – a story for another day.
We love holidays and aim for at least 1 a year.
Holidays are a brilliant time for a family to get together, without the pressures of life, and spend time bonding. Prior to doing our Owner Builder Project (www.ownerbuildersupport.com.au) I even made sure we had a holiday booked at the end of the project. My plaster and his wife thought we were mad “you have just built a house, why are you going on holidays”. I just knew, as a family, we needed it – you are a long time dead and you never get this time back.
As a family, over the years, we have visited a number of different countries (Hawaii, Vanuatu, California, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, India, Ethiopia) and previously I was able to organise it quite cheaply (Scottish blood kicks in here). But something happened (maybe I got old) and before I knew it we were spending between $4,000 to $7,000 for a 2 week holiday. In fact we have just returned from 2 weeks in Thailand via Disneyland in Hong Kong which set us back $7,000 and this was using frequent flyer points for the flights.
There has to be a better way…
And the campervan trailer was born. Credit has to be given at this point to our daughter’s friend’s parents (did you follow that one?) for the idea. They had come to the same conclusion. By buying a campervan trailer they could holiday 2 or 3 times more for the same price.
This is a blog about our holidays but more specifically about our campervan trailer adventures.
